Delhi: Former Indian team veteran batsman Mohammad Kaif has advised Shubman Gill to take inspiration from Ajinkya Rahane. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Gill has been appointed as the captain of the Indian Test team. The upcoming series against England will be the first assignment of Gill as captain.
Kaif has suggested Gill to talk to Rahane, as Rahane also led a young team in Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He said that Gill also needs to do the same thing.
Kaif said in a video shared on his X (X) account, “When Rahane was captaining India in Australia, everyone was saying before the Gaba Test that it is a very young team. So Gill may probably call Rahane and talk to Rahane, because Rahane had done a great job with the young players in that tour. Gill will have to do something like that.”
Rahane took over the captaincy of the Indian team when Virat Kohli returned to India for the birth of his first child after the first Test. Under Rahane’s captaincy, the young Indian team made a brilliant comeback and won the series 2–1 and also broke Australia’s 34-year-old invincible record in Gaba.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Test team. Karun Nair has returned to the team after eight years after his brilliant performance in domestic cricket. Mohammed Shami has not been selected due to fitness problems, while Arshdeep Singh has got a place in the Test team for the first time. Sarfaraz Khan has been dropped from the team despite not getting a single opportunity in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
