Delhi: Former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, who retired from international cricket after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, has expressed his opinion on the next captaincy of the Test team. Ashwin has said to give his old spin partner Ravindra Jadeja a chance as an interim captain.
Capital crisis after Rohit and Virat
After the retirement of big players like Team India captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batsman Virat Kohli, the emptiness of leadership has come in the Indian Test team. In such a situation, the team is looking for a new captain who can take the team forward.
Gill can be new captain
According to reports, Shubman Gill can be made the new captain of the Test team before the tour of England. However, Gill’s performance in Test has been average so far. His average in 32 Tests is only 35. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s name was also in discussion, but seeing his fitness, it is difficult to make him permanent captain.
Make Jadeja a temporary captain
Ashwin believes that Jadeja is one of the most experienced players of the team and can be made captain at least the next World Test Championship Bicycle.
Ashwin said, “If you want to train a young player by training 2 years, then Jadeja can do the same work for 2 years. You can also keep them as vice-captains. Maybe my suggestion seems a bit different, but it should be considered.”
Advice before captaincy given to Gill
Ashwin also advised Shubman Gill to focus on domestic cricket before taking responsibility for Test captaincy. He said that good performance in IPL is necessary, but the test captaincy does not get from just one season performance.
Ashwin said, “If the Gujarat Titans reaches the IPL playoffs and Gill performs well, he will definitely get the benefit. But for the Test captaincy it is necessary that the captain has complete knowledge of the country’s domestic cricket.”
