Delhi: Australia star all -rounder Glenn Maxwell has been named the new captain of Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom. This decision was taken just one day before the first match of the third season. He has replaced Steve Smith, who won the title to the team last year.
Steve Smith did not completely move away from captaincy
However, Smith has not been removed from the captaincy. The franchise informed on June 11 that Smith will be available for only 2 matches this season. In these two matches, he will again handle the captaincy and will lead the Maxwell team in the remaining matches.

Washington Freedom will play its first match on 12 June. He will face San Francisco Unicorn, captained by Corey Anderson in Okland Colisium, California.
Why is Smith not captaining?
Smith will not be available for Washington Freedom in most matches this time. The reason for this is the national commitments of Australia. The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 finals after playing against South Africa, Australia has to play a three -Test series on the West Indies tour. Meanwhile, Smith can join the team for two matches in the spare time.
Maxwell’s performance?
Maxwell was also part of the Washington Freedom in the last season. He scored a total of 153 runs in five innings, including a half -century. His batting average was 38.25. He also shone in bowling, took 10 wickets in eight matches and his average was 17. His economy rate was 6.66, which was quite effective.
Maxwell as captain in T20
Maxwell has a good captaincy experience in T20. He has played 65 matches captaining the Melbourne stars in the Big Bash League (BBL). Out of these, the team won in 34, defeat in 30 and one match was inconclusive. However, his team has not yet won the BBL title.
In the IPL, he captained Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in 2017. In that season, the team won seven out of 14 matches and missed a little on reaching the playoffs. Punjab Kings have not been able to win the IPL title yet.
