Delhi: England captain Harry Brook on Wednesday confirmed that Jamie Smith would open for the hosts in the ODI match against West Indies on Thursday. This will be the first match of the three -match series.

Brook, who has become captain in place of Jose Butler, said, “He has so much strength and his technology is so good that he can face the swing ball.”

Smith batted at number three in the Champions Trophy for England, where he scored at an average of just 8 and his highest score was 15. He bats at number seven in the Test team.

Brook said, “Baz (Head Coach Brendon McCullum) and I believe that he can become a great white ball opener. I am not saying that he has confirmed his place, but he will get a good chance. He is a tremendous player and in Test cricket we have seen that he can play the ball. No reason is the reason that he can not bat as an opener.”

The second match between the two teams will be played in Cardiff on Sunday and the third Tuesday at the Oval.
