Delhi: A big news has come out from the cricket world. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has taken away ODI status from the women’s cricket team of America (USA). The UAE women’s team has got the direct benefit of this. Now the women’s team of UAE has officially got the status of ODI cricket. This change will be applicable from 12 May 2025.
UAE gets ODI status, USA out
ICC has given ODI status to 16 women teams for the cycle of 2025 to 2029. UAE has also joined them. Earlier this status was with America, but now UAE has replaced it. The remaining four associate teams- Thailand, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Scotland have maintained their ODI status.
How did uae get a chance
Thailand and Scotland confirmed their place by performing well in the recent women’s ODI World Cup qualifiers. At the same time, PNG and Netherlands retained ODI status with the help of their T20I rankings. UAE’s team was ranked 16th in the T20I rankings, and on the basis of this they were given this status.
According to ICC rules, the teams receiving ODI status have to play at least 8 ODIs in the next 3-4 years, only then they can maintain the status.
There was a qualifier in Pakistan
In the World Cup qualifier held in Pakistan, Scotland performed well and defeated teams like West Indies and Thailand and made it to the top-4. At the same time, Thailand’s team lost all their matches. With this tournament, Pakistan and Bangladesh have cut the World Cup ticket, but according to reports, Pakistan’s team will not come to play World Cup in India and will play their match on neutral venue.
Australia number 1 in T20 rankings
Talking about T20I ranking, Australia’s women’s team is at number one with 299 rating points. England team remains second with 279 points and India’s women’s team in third place with 260 points.
Currently, the women’s team of USA is playing a series against Zimbabwe. At the same time, UAE’s team is participating in the T20I series against Thailand, Hong Kong and Kuwait in Bangkok.
