The foundation stone of this stadium was laid in 1969 and the construction work started in 1970. It was earlier known as the Karnataka State Cricket Association Stadium. Later, its name was changed to pay tribute to M Chinnaswamy Mudalir. M Chinnaswamy was a lawyer by profession who was a member of the Karnataka State Cricket Association for about 40 years. He was also the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 1977 to 1980 where 35000 spectators have a seating capacity. The stadium is spread over 16.5 acres with three entry points.
