Delhi: Mumbai Indians (Mi) coach Mahela Jayawardene has revealed why the team has used veteran batsman Rohit Sharma as an impact player. Jayawardene said that Rohit suffered a minor injury during the Champions Trophy, due to which he has not been able to recover completely. For this reason, the team has used him less in fielding so that his batting can be emphasized more.
Full season used carefully
In the beginning of the season, Rohit also missed a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), when his injury was ambushed. Since then, he has been seen as an impact player in most matches and usually comes in the field when Mumbai’s bowling is about to end.
Plan was not the case initially
Jayawardene told in a pre-match press conference that initially it was not the plan of the team to make Rohit an impact player, but had to do so due to the circumstances of some grounds. He said that some venue requires fast and agile fielder, and the team had to rest to maintain the balance.
“Batting is most important”
The coach clearly said that Rohit’s batting is most important for the team, so he was saved from more fielding keeping in mind his injury. He said, “We do not want Rohit to be given excessive weight, because he is still struggling with a slight injury. So we used him less on the field and gave priority to his batting.”
Staying out of the field, they are also giving important contribution
Even though Rohit is not on the field all the time, the coach said that he is actively involved in the team’s strategy and in communication with the players. During the timeout or by dugout, they keep giving necessary guidelines to the players. Jayawardene said that his experience is very important for the team.
Returned in form with bat
Rohit Sharma has scored 293 runs in 10 matches so far and his form has also shown better in the last few matches. The team hopes that as the tournament progresses, Rohit will play more responsibility and will strengthen the team by handling his fitness.
