Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has re -enacted an old rule before the 2025 mega auction, according to which the players who have not played international cricket for the last five or more years can be counted in the category of players. Under this rule, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has retained its former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for just Rs 4 crore.
Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong resentment about this decision. He criticized this rule and said that the limit of Rs 4 crore is very high for uncapricated players and it seems that this rule has been brought especially with the objective of keeping Dhoni intact for CSK.
Gavaskar wrote in his column, “Many players who are bought for large amounts, they gradually disappear, because their hunger and inspiration are satisfied. Franchises may not affect it, but Indian cricket is harmed by it, whether the player is successful or not.”
Gavaskar expressed concern over young players about its impact and said, “Most of the young players, who suddenly become millionaires, are first surprised at their luck, and then feel the pressure to play with veterans to whom they have only imagined. They are often not included in the list of top 30 players in their state.”
However, it is important to mention that the maximum retention amount of Rs 4 crore for uncapormed players is applicable from IPL 2022 only.
A total of 10 franchisees have retained 12 unaccounted players before the mega auction of IPL 2025. Two of these players, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and fast bowler Sandeep Sharma, have been retained under the rule, which says that if a player has not played international cricket for five years, then he can be considered unaccounted.
