Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s name disappeared from the team sheet in the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy being played between India and Australia in Sydney. Rohit’s name was nowhere in the team sheet released by BCCI immediately after the toss. In place of Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah stepped into the field for the toss and told that Rohit himself has decided to take rest from this match.
Rohit’s name not in the team sheet
BCCI did not issue any official statement on Rohit’s absence. Even in the team sheet that was shared in the official WhatsApp group of BCCI, Rohit’s name was not there. Rohit’s name was not included in the list of main players and reserve players.
Shubman Gill and Prasidh Krishna returned to the team, and the list of reserve players included players like Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Abhimanyu Easwaran and Harshit Rana. Apart from Rohit, only one other player, Akash Deep, was not in the list as he was out due to injury.
Rohit’s bad form
Rohit Sharma took this decision when he had scored only 31 runs in five innings of three Test matches. The year 2024 was very bad for Rohit in Test cricket. He scored only 619 runs in 26 innings of 14 matches, in which his average was 24.76. His 67th Test match played in Melbourne might be the last match of his Test career. It is believed that Rohit may soon announce his retirement from Test cricket.
