Delhi: Veteran cricketer Jose Butler announced to leave the captaincy of England’s ODI and T20 team on Friday, 28 February. The decision came after a poor performance in the group stage of England’s 2025 Champions Trophy. On Saturday, England played their last group match against South Africa in Karachi, losing by seven wickets. England could not win a single match in this tournament.
On Monday, Butler wrote a long post on social media and expressed grief over his decision. Earlier, he shared a part of Rudyard Kipping’s famous poem ‘IF’ (IF).

Recalling the journey of his captaincy, Butler wrote, “It is very sad that I am deciding to leave the white ball of England. Leading my country is a great respect, and I will always remember it proudly. Recent results are clear, and I think it’s the right time for me and the team that we move forward. I want to thank all the players, coaching staff and fans of England who supported me in this journey. The most thankful to my wife Lewis and my family, who always supported me. Now towards the next chapter. “
