Delhi: A three -match ODI series is being played between India and England. In the first match played in Nagpur, Team India won by 4 wickets. In this match, Shreyas Iyer batted at number four and played a brilliant innings of 59 runs in 36 balls with the help of 9 fours and 2 sixes. However, Iyer was not initially to be included in the playing XI, on which former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed displeasure.
After Nagpur ODI, Iyer revealed that he did not expect that he would be a part of the playing XI. He told that he was watching the film comfortably one night before the match, but then captain Rohit Sharma got a call that he can play the next day. After this, Iyer went to sleep.
In such a situation, Kaif expressed surprise at this decision and said that how can I do so much excesses with Iyer. He reminded Iyer’s contribution to the 2023 ODI World Cup and said, “The player who took the team to the final, would not be made at number four instead? How is this possible?”
Referring to the World Cup semi -finals against New Zealand, Kaif said that Iyer scored a century in 70 balls in Wankhede, including 8 sixes. He said, “If Iyer did not have that innings, India could have lost that match.”
Kaif further said that Mohammed Shami received the ‘Player of the Match’ Award for taking 7 wickets in that match, but Iyer’s innings was equally important.
Question on place of number four
Kaif expressed his displeasure over the issue, saying, “The position of the first number four was not confirmed, but when Iyer strengthened his place, he was excluded. This is beyond comprehension. “
It is worth noting that after Kaif’s statement, the debate has intensified why an important player like Iyer was kept in confusion about the place in the playing XI.
