Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami last played for India in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. After this, he was out of the team due to ankle injury and had to undergo surgery. He has said that the “hunger to play for the country” inspired him to make a comeback after a long injury.
Shami’s patriotism
“The hunger to play for the country should never end,” Shami said at the felicitation ceremony for U-15 women cricketers organized by the Cricket Association of Bengal at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
He further said, “If you love your country, you will always keep fighting. Even if you get injured 10 times. I always have this in my mind that no matter how many matches I play, they are very few for me. Because once I leave cricket, I may never get this opportunity again.”
Great performance in domestic cricket
After recovering from injury, 34-year-old Shami played for Bengal in Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20), and Vijay Hazare Trophy (50 overs). Now he is ready to play in the first T20 match against England to be held at Eden Garden on Wednesday.
Talking about his injury, Shami said, “It never happens that a player, who represents his state or country, thinks of quitting the game after an injury. Whenever we get injured, the only question in our mind is – when can we make a comeback. If you are hardworking and dedicated, no injury can keep you away for long. You will always find a way back.”
