Delhi: Sri Lankan great spinner Muttiah Muralitharan praised India’s legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and said that he is an inspiration for young cricketers. Ashwin said goodbye to international cricket after the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane, taking 537 wickets in 106 Test matches. He is India’s second most successful bowler after Anil Kumble (619 wickets). Muraleedharan said that this achievement is no small thing.

Muralitharan said in an interview to Telecom Asia Sport, “Ashwin started his career as a batsman and practiced spin as a part-time bowler. He soon realized that his batting ambitions would not be fulfilled, and he concentrated entirely on bowling. Salute to this decision and his hard work. Taking 500 Test wickets is not easy.”
Muralitharan, who took 800 wickets in 133 Tests, recalled Ashwin’s early days and said, “When he came on the field, I was at the last stage of my career, but I saw that he was a passionate player and eager to learn.” . He sought advice, asked thoughtful questions, and continually worked hard to improve himself. This hunger and dedication makes them special.”
Ashwin is the seventh most successful bowler in Test cricket history and the second most successful off-spinner after Muralitharan. Muralitharan said, “Retiring as India’s second highest wicket-taker is a big achievement. He has made Tamil Nadu cricket and entire India proud. I wish him success in his next innings.”
Muralitharan also praised Ashwin’s passion for learning. He said, “His passion for learning never diminished. The variations he added to his bowling are proof that he was never satisfied with his achievements. He always tried to move forward.”
