Delhi: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are soon going to finalize an agreement that will give it the right to host the next three finals of the World Test Championship (WTC). These finals will be played in England by 2031. According to ‘The Telegraph’ report, the International Cricket Council (ICC) can confirm this decision in its annual meeting to be held in July.
ICC has received oral consent
It has been told in the report that ICC has already given the green signal to ECB in advance. However, India had also shown interest in hosting the WTC final and this issue has been discussed in ICC meetings many times. But England has been given priority due to his strong hosting capacity and also a good crowd in neutral Test matches.
All finals have been played in England so far
Significantly, the three WTC finals played so far have been held in England. In 2021, the first final between India and New Zealand was in Southampton, which was played during Kovid. This was followed by the final of India and Australia in 2023 at the Oval, London. The 2025 final is currently running at Lord’s between South Africa and Australia, where the stadium was packed for the first three days.
Why did England get the advantage of hosting?
One of the reasons is that June is the time of England’s early summer season, which gives an empty window in the world’s busy cricket schedule. At this time, the chains of teams like India, Australia and England end, which makes this time ideal for the WTC final.
Questions have arisen on location and timing
However, questions have also been raised about hosting and time. After the 2023 finals, Indian captain Rohit Sharma questioned its timing and venue. He had said, “Why should this final be held in March also after the IPL final. Why only June and England?”
“Winner gets a chance to host”
Australia captain Pat Cummins suggested that the WTC final should be hosted to the last time winner. This can add more adventures to the competition.
The final series of three matches also suggested
There has also been a demand to convert the WTC final into a three -match series instead of the sole match. Virat Kohli suggested this in 2021. Before the final this year, Australian batsman Steve Smith also supported the idea, although he admitted that it would be a big challenge to find so much space in the schedule.
The start of the next WTC series
The next World Test Championship series will begin from 20 June 2025, when the first Test will be played between England and India at the headingley ground in Leeds. This will be a five -match series.
