Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Sri Lanka on a two -day state visit, where he was awarded the ‘Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan’ honor. During this tour, he met the legendary players of the Sri Lankan team who won the Cricket World Cup in 1996. In this special meeting in Colombo, PM Modi interacted with other players including Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vas, Arvinda de Silva, Marvan Atapattu.
Significantly, these players defeated Australia in the 1996 World Cup final and gave Sri Lanka her first world title. After the meeting, PM Modi shared a picture of this moment on the social media platform X and wrote, “Connect through cricket! I was happy to get an opportunity to talk to the players of the Sri Lankan cricket team who won the 1996 World Cup. This team captured the hearts of countless sports fans.”
Sri Lankan players also responded to this meeting. Former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Attapattu said, “It was an incredible experience. Meeting a leader who brought India to new heights, is a matter of pride for us. This meeting was respectable and fortunate for us.”
At the same time, Arvinda de Silva, who scored a century in the 1996 final, said, “Prime Minister Modi is a respected leader. He has given a lot to India and for the third time it is an extraordinary achievement to become the Prime Minister of the country. We liked it very much by talking to him.”
Former opener Sanath Jayasuriya also described this meeting as special and said, “It was a great experience to meet the Prime Minister. We discussed cricket, current situation and development of India. There was also talks about the International Cricket Stadium in Jaffna.”
