Delhi: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has said that it will not be surprising if Rohit Sharma decides to retire from Test cricket. He said that if Rohit performs well in the last match, then he should happily bid farewell to this format. Speculation about Rohit’s future has intensified before the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to be held in Sydney. Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir said in the press conference that the playing eleven will be decided after seeing the pitch, but did not clarify whether Rohit will play or not.
In the current series, Rohit has so far scored 31 runs in three matches at an average of 6.2. Shastri said, “Rohit will take his own decision regarding his career, but considering his age, I will not be surprised if he retires. The team also has young players like Shubhman Gill, who is playing at an average of more than 40 this year and is currently sitting on the bench.
While giving advice to Rohit, Shastri said, “If I were in his place, I would tell him to go on the field and play aggressively against the opposition. His style of play does not seem effective at this time.” He also said that Rohit’s red-ball form has dropped due to not playing his natural game.
It is noteworthy that Australia is currently leading 2-1 in the series. India will have to win this match to keep alive its hopes of reaching the final of the ICC World Test Championship and will also have to pray that Australia does not win both its Test matches against Sri Lanka.
