Delhi: Former Indian team’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin revealed that he decided to retire from international cricket because he felt that his time was over. During the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Ashwin suddenly announced his retirement in Brisbane after the third Test. This decision shocked the cricket world, because no one expected that Ashwin would take such a big step in Australia. He played only one match in this series.
This decision of Ashwin surprised even his father. Ravichandran’s father had said that his son was feeling humiliated, so he suddenly decided to retire. However, Ashwin termed this statement as wrong and appealed to the people to forgive his father and leave him alone. Now for the first time Ashwin has spoken openly about his retirement.
The right-arm spinner said on his YouTube channel, “I think a lot in life about what to do. All this happens naturally. If someone feels that his time has ended, then there is nothing left to think. People talked a lot about my decision, but I don’t think there is anything wrong in it.”
He further said, “I want to play more cricket, but there is no place in the Indian team now. I want to be honest towards the game. If I don’t deserve to play for the Farewell Test, I wouldn’t want to get this opportunity myself. It is against my principles if I play the farewell test just for this reason. I think I could have played more cricket, but retiring was the right decision for me.”
Career statistics are fantastic
38-year-old Ashwin played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 65 T20 matches for India. He took 537 wickets in Test, 156 wickets in ODI and 72 wickets in T-20. Apart from this, he scored 3503 runs in Test, 707 runs in ODI and 184 runs in T20.
