Former all -rounder Moin Ali of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) recently revealed that the franchise had almost decided to remove Virat Kohli as captain in 2019. Moin claimed that Parthiv Patel was on the verge of being appointed as the captain of RCB during Gary Kirsten’s coaching tenure.

In 2019, RCB stood at the bottom of the table with just five wins and just 11 points out of 14 matches. Patel’s season was good and scored 373 runs with an average of 26.64 and a strike-card of 139.18. He was also part of RCB in 2020, but did not play any match as the team fielded Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal as openers and finished fourth in the points table. Patel retired from IPL in December the same year and never played again.

Ali, who was part of the RCB team between 2018 and 2020, revealed that he was being considered very seriously to make someone else a captain in place of Kohli. He said that Parthiv was being seriously considered for this role.

Parthiv was in the race to become captain: Moin

Moin said to the sports, “Yes, I think it was so. I am sure that it was. In the last year when Gary Kirsten was the captain – I believe after the first year – Parthiv was in the race to become captain. He had a great cricketing mind. That was the discussion at that time. I did not know what happened or why it did not happen, but I am sure that he was seriously considered for this role.”

Kohli eventually gave up the captaincy of RCB in 2021. Faf du Plessis replaced him until 2024, but he was not retained in 2025. There was talk of Kohli to take charge again and some serious reports also came, but RCB finally decided to go with the silver Patidar of Madhya Pradesh.

Under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, RCB finally finished its title drought in 2025. Kohli, playing a big role with the bat, scored 657 runs in 15 matches.
