The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly IPL wants to allow all franchises to retain one additional player for 2025. Teams can retain a maximum of five players, which is one more than the previous edition, which could help teams like Mumbai. In such a situation, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings can retain their key players for the 2025 season.
There will be no RTM option in IPL 2025 mega auction
However, if this happens then the teams will not have the option of Right to Match during the mega auction. Mumbai Indians can get the biggest benefit from this decision of BCCI, because they will have a chance to retain Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in the team.
In a recent meeting held at its headquarters, BCCI had discussed the retainership of the players with all the 10 team owners. Most of the franchises wanted to retain 5-6 players as this would give them continuity. It is believed that after considering his request, BCCI has accepted his views. He also believes that retaining five players will also ensure that the brand value of the franchise will be protected.
Before the 2022 season, franchises were allowed to retain 4 players, with a maximum of 3 Indians and 2 foreign players. However, it is not yet clear how many domestic and foreign players the teams can retain in IPL 2025.
The IPL last held a mega auction in 2022, when Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered the league, giving all teams an equal opportunity in the auction. However, teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders will face a dilemma while selecting their five-man retain list.
