Delhi: Rishabh Pant, vice -captain of the Indian Test team, may be in trouble due to arguing with umpire Paul Refel on the third day of the first Test against England. Pant may be accused of breaking two rules of ICC’s code of conduct.
What was the mistake with Rishabh?
The incident occurred after the second last ball of the 61st over of England’s first innings. Harry Brook hit a four off Mohammad Siraj. Pant did not like the shape of the ball. He asked the umpire to show the ball. Reefel tested the ball from the gauge and considered it fine. Pant appeared angry with this. He threw the ball on the ground with a reverse hand and went fast. The English audience immediately hooted Pant.
In the commentary, Ravi Shastri said that the demand to change the ball repeatedly shows that nothing is happening and the pant was frustrated. Mark Bachler added that the umpire Refel did not like this action.
What does ICC rule say?
Under the ICC Rule 2.8, there is a leaflet-1 or Level-2 offense on the decision of the umpire. According to Rule 2.9, it is also punishable to throw a ball or something wrong towards a player or umpire. For both these violations, Pant may take penalty or D merit marks.
India finished the day’s game at 90/2 and now there is a lead of 96 runs. If Pant is found guilty, then the team may be affected in the next innings or matches.
