Delhi: After the Indian team’s defeat in the Melbourne Test, captain Rohit Sharma had to explain why he did not include Shubman Gill in the playing eleven. Gill was dropped from this match and Washington Sundar was included in the team. Gill scored 90, 1, 31, 28 and 1 in the first three Test matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy, but after this he was dropped from the Melbourne Test. On this, Rohit Sharma said in the press conference that Gill was not dropped, but it was part of a strategy.

Reason for change in team
Rohit Sharma told, “In the conversation with him it was clear that he was not dropped. We just wanted a little extra bowler in the bowling, so we chose an all-rounder so that our bowling line-up was not weak. I didn’t want to compromise a batsman for a bowler, we wanted to have as deep a batting line-up as we could, and also have a bowling attack that could take 20 wickets, so we did everything possible. Kept that in mind and unfortunately Gill had to compromise.”
Rohit Sharma said “Shubman Gill wasn’t dropped – we just wanted to have that combination, just wanted to bat deep and bowling unit taking 20 wickets – the discussion was never about he didint well or not scoring runs – it was just about combination. “. pic.twitter.com/HyeGBJExDP

There was a need for deep batting in the team
Rohit further said, “With Gill we never had any doubt that he was not batting well, or was not scoring runs, or anything like that. We just had to find that combination where we could cover both the aspects, batting and bowling, so we chose that option. This was the only reason why he did not get a place in this match.”
