Delhi: Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been accused of “breaking” the team’s confidence. This allegation has been made by former Pakistani cricketer Basit Ali. He said that after the win in Perth, Rohit decided to open again, which affected the stability of the team.

Opening after playing at number 6

Rohit, who did not play the first match of the series due to the birth of his second child, left the opening after a brilliant innings by KL Rahul. He batted at number 6 in Adelaide and Brisbane. However, his performance was poor in three innings, after which he again put himself in the opening slot. Due to this decision, Rahul was sent to number 3 and Shubman Gill was dropped from the playing eleven.

But, Rohit’s form did not change. In the fourth Test (Melbourne), he could score only 3 and 9 runs, leaving his average in the series at just 6.20, which is the worst performance by any foreign captain in Australia.

‘Destroyed the team’s confidence’

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali said that Rohit’s decision to open became the reason for the team’s poor performance. He said, “Had India become overconfident after the victory in Perth? A decision – no, I will open. Rohit is not in form and the one who was scoring runs, KL Rahul, you also put him under pressure. You completely broke the confidence of the team.”

Basit also suggested that Rohit should step down from the captaincy and hand over the responsibility for the last Test to Jasprit Bumrah. He said, “I believe that now the time has come for Rohit to leave the captaincy. Bumrah should be made the captain. You have done a lot for India, but now your body is not supporting you.”
