Delhi: Pakistan’s opening batsman Saim Ayub suffered an ankle injury during the first day of the second Test match between South Africa and Pakistan being played at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. This incident happened during 6.2 overs of the match, when Mohammad Abbas bowled the ball at a speed of 124 km per hour to Ryan Rickelton. The ball was of fuller length, which Rickelton played with the entire face of the bat open, but it hit the outer edge of his bat and passed between gully and backward point.
To stop the ball, both fielders Aamir Jamal and Saim Ayub gave chase quickly. Jamal tried to throw the ball inside by sliding brilliantly near the boundary, but in the meantime Saim Ayub slipped and twisted his right ankle. Immediately after the fall, Ayub was seen groaning in pain and he signaled to call the physio on the field itself.
After getting injured, Ayub was taken outside the boundary line. At present no official information has been given regarding how serious the injury is. In place of Saim, Abdullah Shafiq has been fielded as a substitute. The team management and fans hope that Ayub’s injury is not too serious and he returns to the field soon.
It is noteworthy that this incident is a matter of concern for Pakistan, because Syme is one of the important players of the team and his absence can have a deep impact on the team’s batting. Further information regarding the situation will be shared by the team management soon.
