Delhi: The first Test match between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan played at Queens Sports Club had no result and the match ended in a draw. Hashmatullah Shahidi was adjudged “Player of the Match” for his excellent performance.

First innings of Zimbabwe and Afghanistan

Batting first, Zimbabwe scored 586 runs in its first innings. During this, Sean Williams scored 154 runs, captain Craig Erwin scored 104 runs and Brian Bennett scored 110 runs. Bain Curran also scored 68 runs in 74 balls, which included 11 fours. Afghanistan’s batsmen performed brilliantly in the counter innings. Afghanistan took the lead over Zimbabwe by scoring 699 runs in its first innings. Rahmat Shah played a brilliant inning of 234 runs and Hashmatullah Shahidi played a brilliant inning of 246 runs. Officer Zazai also scored 113 runs.

A unique record was made in this match, when 6 batsmen from both the teams scored centuries. This had never happened before in the Boxing Day Test.

It rained on the fourth day

Due to rain on the fourth day only 31 overs were played. Afghanistan’s score till stumps was 515 runs, in which Hashmatullah Shahidi was unbeaten on 179 runs and Afsar Zazai was unbeaten on 46 runs. The next day, Afghanistan suffered its first blow when Afsar Zazai was out on 113 runs. Hashmatullah Shahidi was out LBW after scoring 246 runs.

Zimbabwe’s second innings

Zimbabwe scored 142 runs losing 4 wickets in its second innings. In this innings, Brian Bennett took 5 wickets, while Afghanistan’s Ghazanfar took 3 wickets and Navid Zadran, Zaheer Khan and Zia ur Rehman took 2 wickets each. This interesting match ended in a draw, but the big century and brilliant performance in this match made it memorable.
