Delhi: A new era is going to begin in Indian Test cricket. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the red ball format, there can be many changes in Team India’s squad for the upcoming Test series of five matches against England. The challenge before the selectors take important decisions regarding the new captaincy and batting order.
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, the opening slot is empty, but the team has many talented options. Any two of Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal can be given the responsibility of starting the innings. There is a discussion about Gill that he can also handle the captaincy of the team. At the same time, there are speculations about making wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant as vice-captains.
Who will get a chance in number four instead of Kohli, there is a situation of confusion. Karun Nair, Sai Sudarshan and Shreyas Iyer are considered to be the main contenders for this place. However, Shreyas Iyer’s selection in the Test team seems to be difficult at the moment.
According to the recent report by the Telegraph, a BCCI source said that in swing and seaming conditions like foreign tours, especially England, Iyer’s technology is not able to fully assure the selectors.
The source said, “If it had been a domestic series, Iyer’s claim would have been strong. But, in the situation in England, the art and restraint of the ball is very important, which would not be seen in Iyer’s game right now.”
Another board official said, “Shreyas is an aggressive batsman and wants to score fast. Test cricket in England is something else, strong defense against patience, technology and swing.”
After being out of the Indian team, Iyer performed tremendously in domestic cricket and then made a brilliant comeback in the limited overs series against England. Along with this, he also played an important role in the team’s title campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Significantly, the Test series between India and England is going to start from June 20. The BCCI can announce a Test squad today or tomorrow.
