Delhi: Former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Jasprit Bumrah should be made the next Test captain, because Rohit Sharma’s performance is not living up to expectations. Recently, India lost the series 1-3 to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. When Rohit Sharma missed the first match of the series, Bumrah captained the team in Perth. After this, he also led the team in the decisive Test match in Sydney, when Rohit was out of the playing eleven due to poor form.
Concern about Bumrah
The concern about Bumrah is whether he will be able to play in every test match. Even in the Sydney Test, he remained out of most of the match due to back pain. Many fans and cricket experts believe that it may be difficult for Bumrah to play every Test, hence captaincy will be challenging for him.
Sanjay Manjrekar’s statement
Manjrekar believes that the vice-captain of the team should be someone who earns his place in the team on the basis of his performance.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Manjrekar said, “I don’t know who should be the vice-captain, but I know who shouldn’t be. I will not say much on this. The vice-captain should be someone who earns a place in the team on the basis of his performance. At present the focus has to be on the England series. Hopefully Bumrah will remain fit and captain the team.”
‘Where is his career right now?’
Manjrekar also said that there was discussion about considering Shubman Gill as the captaincy option, but his career is currently on the decline. He said, “There was talk of seeing Shubman Gill as the vice-captain in Australia. But look at where his career is at the moment. Bumrah was made the captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma and it was the right decision. The first criteria for selection of captain or vice-captain should be performance.”
