Shubman’s team, Gavaskar’s sharp statement on Gambhir’s decision.

Delhi: Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav was not included in the playing XI in the fourth match of the Test series being played between India and England. The Indian team had to bear the brunt of this decision. Not only this, questions were raised on India’s strategy and bowling combination in the match. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has given his response to this issue.

The statement came during discussion on Sony Sports

On Sony Sports, commentator Harsha Bhogle asked Sunil Gavaskar a question, whose answer is now in the discussion. Harsha asked that for a young player like Shubman Gill, a coaching staff or a senior person like Gautam Gambhir went to say, “Gentleman, this is my team”, how easy or difficult it is?

Gavaskar’s answer – “There were no coaches in our time.”

Responding to this question, Gavaskar said, “Look, there was no role in our time. There were some former players as a team manager or assistant manager, whom you could go and talk. They used to advise you at lunch time, at the end of the day or before the match.”

Gavaskar further said, “It is a bit difficult for me to understand this joint system of captain and coach, when I was the captain, we had no former veteran coach. We had people like Wing Commander Durrani or Raj Singh Dungarpur. I was with us only once and he gave very good guidance.”

“The captain’s decision is final”

Gavaskar also spoke openly about team selection and captaincy. He said, “The issue is that the team is completely of the captain, as Nasir Hussain also said, if the captain does not want a player, whether he is Shardul Thakur or Kuldeep Yadav, he will not be taken in the team. It is the captain’s decision.”

He also added, “Everything may look normal from outside, but the truth is that the captain is responsible and he leads the team.”
