Delhi: Australia’s brilliant batsman Steve Smith scored a great century on the first day of the first Test match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday. On the Gaul ground, he completed his century in 179 balls. He scored a century by running three runs off the second ball of the 78th over by Nishan Peeris. This was his 35th Test century, and with this century he broke many records.

Smith completed 35 centuries

Smith left behind six veteran batsmen including Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar with this century. He is now at number seven in the list of batsmen who scored the most centuries in Test cricket. Before this, Gavaskar, Younis Khan (Pakistan), Brian Lara (West Indies) and Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) scored 34-34 centuries.

Australia’s second highest Test century batsman

Smith is Australia’s second highest Test century player, before him Ricky Potting, named 41 centuries. Sachin Tendulkar (51) holds the record of scoring the most centuries in Test cricket.

16th Test century as captain

At this time Smith is captaining the team in the absence of Australia’s regular captain Pat Cummins. This was his 16th Test century as captain, which has broken the records of Alan Border and Steve Waugh. Both of them had scored 15-15 centuries while captain.
