Delhi: India’s vice -captain and star batter Smriti Mandhana has given a big statement about the future of women’s cricket. She will captain Ratnagiri Jets in the first season of the upcoming woman Maharashtra Premier League (MPL). Through this new league, Maharashtra has now joined the list of few states, such as Delhi, Bengal and Uttarakhand, where women T20 franchise cricket is being promoted.
Mandhana believes that state level women players will get a big platform from such leagues. He said, “WPL scouts will be eyeing this platform, which will give the players a big opportunity. Also these demonstrations can become benchmarks for selection in the state team.”
Mandhana also praised Jets Club’s initiative, which starts giving professional training to girls at the age of 14–15. He said, “We got these facilities a little delay, but today’s generation has great opportunities to develop fitness, skill development and understanding of games.”
Regarding the pressure of live matches on TV, he said, “Whenever you land on the field, you want to give the best for the team. It should be not a source of pressure, but a source of inspiration. Play cricket, enjoy and enjoy that journey with the team. Win the trophy or not, memories are always together.”
Mandhana said, “I do not believe in senior or junior, there is only difference in experience. We are all together and will play like a family.”
He expressed pride in the fact that Maharashtra is now starting his women’s league. He said, “I started playing cricket from Maharashtra. The daughters of this state will now get a big platform to show themselves. I am very happy and proud that I am becoming a part of it.”
