Delhi: Former South African team veteran opener Harshile Gibbs believes that India’s captaincy is definitely a big responsibility and pressure work, but young opener Shubman Gill has the maturity and restraint in Shubman Gill that can make him a long -term captain.
Gill took the Gujarat Titans (GT) to the playoffs in IPL 2024 and this was just the second season as his captain. At the same time, he has been appointed as a Test captain after the retirement of Rohit Sharma.
Talking to PTI video during the Legen-Z T10 league in Delhi, Gibbs said, “They are young, they need to learn. You have to be better and have to score runs around the world.”
He said that captaincy develops over time and Gill has restraint, which will make them better in this role. He said, “He has immense talent, and now that he is captaining India, there will definitely be pressure. But, he looks mature, adopting the challenge and will perform well.”
51 -year -old Gibbs also praised Shreyas Iyer’s recent performance and said that the missing tour was unfortunate for him. He said, “Somebody has to sit outside, this is the depth of Indian cricket. He will soon return to the Test team. He is a brilliant person and especially his ability to hit the ball is tremendous.”
