Delhi: Great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has pointed out the lack of technique of playing spin among the Indian batsmen. Recently, India had to face defeat in the three-match Test series against New Zealand, in which Indian batsmen were seen struggling in front of the spinners. After this defeat, many cricket experts have raised questions on his technique.
Gavaskar explained why Indian batsmen are struggling against spin. He believes that white ball cricket has affected his technique. He said that due to playing more in the limited overs format, the batsmen are not able to play with a soft hand, due to which they are unable to face spin.
Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said, “I think this problem has arisen due to playing in limited overs matches. In the white ball format, batsmen play with a hard hand, but when the pitch favors the bowlers, it becomes necessary to use a soft hand. “This makes it easier to control the speed of the bat.”
Decline in performance of Indian batsmen
Let us tell you that since 2021, Indian batsmen have been struggling against spin even on home grounds, due to which their average has declined. Star batsman Virat Kohli’s domestic average was 68.42 in 2019, which has come down to 29.92 in 2021. At the same time, Rohit Sharma’s average has fallen from 88.33 to 35.58 and KL Rahul’s average has fallen from 44.25 to 29.33.
The performance of the Indian batsmen against New Zealand may have been disappointing, but it will be important for them to get back in form in the five-match Test series against Australia starting later this month. If India wants to make it to the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), then it will have to register a 4-0 win against Australia.
