Delhi: Former Indian captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has expressed displeasure over the young players who only focus on playing the Indian Premier League (IPL) and make a distance from domestic cricket. He said that these players are earning crores of rupees, but really do not deserve it.

Gavaskar clearly said that the players who are constantly playing domestic cricket should get respect. He wrote that rewards should be given to such players who play Ranji Trophy every season, in the hope that one day they will get the cap of India.

In IPL 2025, many unkapted players like Rasik Dar (RCB), Naman Dhir (Mumbai Indians), Nehal Vadhera (Punjab Kings), Abdul Samad (LSG), Anshul Kamboj (CSK), Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings), Ashutosh Sharma (Delhi Capitals) have earned crores. But many of these players focus on earning names and money in IPL only by distance from domestic cricket.

Gavaskar’s sharp attack

In his column written for the sports star, Gavaskar said, “To say that the market is responsible for this, it is not right. If you see the list of these IPL millionaires uncapormed players, you will find that there are very few of them who have tried to do something for India. They are earning crores on the strength of luck, but they are not worth it.”

Ranji trophy people should get benefit

Gavaskar suggested to the BCCI and the state cricket associations that some concrete steps should be taken to promote domestic cricket. He said, “The BCCI has recently raised the match fees of the players, it is a good thing. But if such a slab system is brought that those who play more matches get more money, then more players will be inspired to play Ranji Trophy.”

Example of Priyank Panchal

Sunil Gavaskar praised former Gujarat captain Priyank Panchal and said that he played Ranji Trophy for about two decades but he neither got a chance to play in Team India nor in the IPL. Despite this, he played domestic cricket with full devotion. Gavaskar said that it is necessary to get respect for such players, so that the rest of the youth can also learn from them.

These things of Gavaskar have come at a time when many players who shine in the IPL are keeping distance from domestic tournaments like Ranji. It is clear from his statement that if Indian cricket is to be strengthened, then domestic cricket cannot be ignored.
