Delhi: Veteran batsman Sunil Gavaskar has given special advice to the struggling Virat Kohli to improve his batting. Kohli’s weakness, especially on balls outside the off-stump, has been a constant cause of trouble for him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

‘Kohli should avoid hitting shots’

Gavaskar has suggested Kohli to avoid playing shots on balls going outside the off stump until he is initially settled at the crease. He told Star Sports, “In the beginning, when you are not set, you should avoid hitting shots. In the first innings, the shot that was played went up.” He further said, “Now the Australian players have noticed it. In the second innings, he deployed a fielder there. Kohli will have to keep this in mind. If he plays straight, he can perform well playing mid-on, mid-wicket and straight shots. They just have to concentrate.”

‘Take reason from Sachin Tendulkar’

Gavaskar advised Kohli by giving the example of Sachin Tendulkar, who had scored almost 250 runs against Australia in the Sydney Test by adopting a special strategy. “The way Sachin Tendulkar played in Sydney can be a lesson for Kohli. In the last three Test innings, Sachin was getting out to slip or cover on balls outside the off stump. He completely stopped playing cover drives and scored around 250 runs playing only straight. He controlled himself and decided not to play the shot there. If Kohli also does this, he can also score a double century.”
