Delhi: India’s crushing defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy raised many questions. But, the issue which is being discussed the most is the future of senior Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The debate on this is going on and BCCI can discuss it for the first time in the Special General Meeting (SGM) to be held this Sunday. The board’s new secretary Devjit Saikia has been given the responsibility of sending a “strong message” to chief selector Ajit Agarkar and “choosing a new team”.
Why questions on Kohli and Rohit?
The Australia tour was considered a “do or die” series for both the players. Kohli made a comeback by scoring a century in Perth, but scored only 90 runs in the remaining matches, which did not include a single half-century. At the same time, Rohit scored only 31 runs in five innings, the average was only 6.2. After this he ruled himself out of the series-deciding match in Sydney. From September till now, Rohit has scored only 164 runs in eight matches, at an average of just 10.
What is the challenge of BCCI?
The ICC Champions Trophy is around the corner and India has to select its probable team by January 12. The new secretary Saikia, who has replaced Jay Shah, is under pressure to end the rumors regarding the future of Rohit and Kohli. Meanwhile, Rohit has made it clear that being out of the Sydney match is not a sign of his retirement.
Statement of former BCCI official
Talking to Dainik Jagran, a former BCCI official said that the board should take strict steps. He said, “The message is going wrong. People can talk sweetly on the internet, but BCCI has to run cricket in the country properly and it should also be shown. Now there is a need to give such a strong message that no player should consider himself bigger than the game. There is a need to choose a new team. The secretary should call the chief selector and give strict instructions.”
India will play its next Test match during the England tour in the second part of June.
