Manjrekar held Kohli responsible
Manjrekar explained that it is a ‘primary rule’ of cricket that the non-striker should always look at his partner while deciding on runs. He said that due to Kohli’s mistake, Jaiswal had to lose his wicket.
Manjrekar also said that Kohli’s statement that he did not listen to Jaiswal’s call is not correct. He clearly saw that Jaiswal was running towards him, yet he refused to run. Manjrekar also added that both players wanted to retain the strike to play the next over, which probably had to be done by part-timer Mitchell Marsh.
Sanjay said, “Just because it is Virat Kohli, we are trying to justify his words. It was a big mistake that he looked back and decided not to take the run. This is not the decision of the non-striker. If it had been Jaiswal’s mistake, fielder Pat Cummins would have thrown to the non-striker. But, Kohli refused, so Jaiswal had no chance.”
Irfan supported Virat
Irfan Pathan replied, “When the ball goes to point, it is the non-striker’s call, but the striker can also refuse.”
Manjrekar disagreed on this and said, “Irfan, this is a matter of point, we are talking about when the ball has gone behind the non-striker.”
When Pathan continued, Manjrekar got angry and said, “Okay, if you don’t want to let me speak, that’s fine.”
In the end, Manjrekar took a dig at Pathan and said, “There should be a change in the coaching manual. Irfan Pathan’s new interpretation should be included. The non-striker should also look at the backward ball to decide whether to take a run or not.”
