Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is getting a new and interesting view in 2025. During the match, the umpire has been seen checking the bat of the players several times. Now these rules are being fully implemented in IPL. The Board of Control of India (BCCI) Secretary and IPL Governor Arun Dhumal said that now every batsman’s bat will pass through ‘bat gauge’ before landing in the field. This gauge will remain with the umpires.

A few days ago, in the match played between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Shimron Hetmyer and Phil Soult were suddenly stopped and their bats were investigated. Both of them were allowed to play when the bat of both went out of the bat gauge easily. In IPL 2025, more than 200 runs are being scored in a row. In such a situation, this step has been taken so that there is no benefit in the game.

Talking to the Indian Express, Arun Dhumal said, “No one should feel that anyone has benefited wrongly. BCCI and IPL have always taken steps to maintain the fairness of the game. We have also used technology very much so that every decision is correct.”

What are the rules related to bat?

  • The width of the bat cannot exceed 4.25 inches (10.8 cm).
  • The depth of the bat is limited to 2.64 inches (6.7 cm) and the thickness of the edges to 1.56 inches (4.0 cm).
  • Bat’s handle should not exceed 52% of its total length.
  • No covering material can be thicker than 0.04 inches (0.1 cm)
  • The thickness of Tow protection should not be more than 0.12 inches (0.3 cm).
  • The bat should get out of the gauge without speculation.

When and how will it be investigated?

Before the match, the bat of the opening batsmen will be examined by the fourth umpire. The rest of the players will check the bat on-field umpires. Earlier this investigation used to take place a day before the match. But, when some players returned with a new and big bat the next day, then this change was considered necessary.

An international batsman said, “The players make the bottom of the bat more heavier, because there are more shots from there. It gives more strength to the sweet spot.”

If the bat is not passed?

There is no penalty under this rule in IPL yet. But, if a player does not bring the bat as per the rule, then he will have to change the bat. If this is done intentionally or again, strict action can be taken.

In IPL 2025 also some players are caught in bat check. Mumbai Indians (Mi) captain Hardik Pandya’s bat checked, but everything was fine. However, Sunil Naren of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) could not get out of the bat gauge and had to change the bat. The Enark Northern of Delhi Capitals (DC) also had to change his bat.
