Delhi: In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Shreyas Iyer has given a brilliant captaincy to Punjab Kings (PBKS) to qualifier 2. However, he could not be selected in the Indian Test team for England tour. Former England spinner Monty Panesar believes that Shreyas Iyer should play county cricket again to get a place in the Indian Test team.
Iyer was dropped after the second Test played against England in Visakhapatnam last year. This time Sai Sudarshan has been given a chance in the Indian team, who has played two seasons in county cricket for all.
Monty Panesar suggested Shreyas
Monty Panesar, who has taken 167 wickets in 50 Tests for England, says that Shreyas Iyer plays well on flat and bouncy pitches, but his technology on seaming pitches still needs to be improved.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Panesar said, “Shreyas Iyer plays well on flat and bouncy pitches. But, when the ball swing, his technology seems a bit messed up. His hands look a little bit hard. He should make a habit of playing late after looking at the ball soon. Now he tries to hit a little more on the ball.”
He said, “That is why the team management has given a chance to the players whose technology is better on the seaming pitches. If Shreyas Iyer wants to return to the Test team then they should play county cricket. The atmosphere and bowling situation there will strengthen their technology.”
Panesar further said, “If Iyer is serious in Test cricket, then he should play a season with a county team. There he will get a good opportunity to prove his technology and the selectors will also feel that their technology has now become stronger against the swing ball.”
Fantastic form of Shreyas Iyer
Iyer’s performance in the Champions Trophy played in Dubai recently was excellent. He scored 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60, including two half -centuries and an unbeaten innings of 79 runs.
Playing for Punjab Kings in this season of IPL, Iyer has scored 516 runs in 15 matches at an average of 46.90. This includes five half -centuries and an unbeaten 97 innings.
