Delhi: Team India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it clear that the team’s entire focus is on the T20 World Cup to be held in India in 2026, not on the 2027 ODI World Cup. Talking to News18 in an interview, Gambhir spoke on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s recent retirement from Test cricket and clarified the situation regarding the ongoing speculation about their ODI future.

2027 World Cup planning is still hurry

Gambhir believes that thinking for the 2027 World Cup is too early as the team has a big tournament in 2026-the T20 World Cup, which will be played in India in February-March. He said, “Our entire focus is on the T20 World Cup right now. 2027 is still two and a half years away.”

“Age does not matter, performance is necessary”

Gambhir further said that age does not matter in cricket if the player is continuously doing well. He said that there is no final decision on Rohit and Kohli’s ODI future and said that nothing has been decided yet.

New round begins after farewell to Test cricket

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket before the England series. Earlier, both players said goodbye to T20 International Cricket after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. Now the Indian Test team is entering a new era, in which the youth will have to take responsibility.

Selector in search of new captain

Gambhir said that after the departure of experienced players like Rohit and Kohli, now other players will have to come forward and take responsibility. The next big question in front of the selectors is the captaincy, in which young names like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are being considered.

Players will get a chance

Gambhir hoped that just as some other player had taken advantage of the opportunity in the absence of Jaspreet Bumrah, in the same way a young player can come forward and do something special for the country. He said, “Sometimes a young man gets a chance to show his ability,” he said.

Team will be announced soon

BCCI can announce the Indian team for the T20 World Cup after the meeting of selectors and Gambhir on 24 May. Everyone’s eyes are now on who will replace Rohit and Kohli and whether both will return to ODI cricket or not.
