Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and veteran batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes that if the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) wins the South Africa title in the final of 2025, it can be the same historical moment for his cricket history, as was the 1983 World Cup for India.

Bangar said in a conversation with India Today, “It has been a year of underardogs and if South Africa wins the title, it will take the importance of WTC to a new height, when a team wins a big title, it gives new inspiration to the cricket community of the entire country.”

South Africa has so far won only one ICC title (1998 Champions Trophy). Since then, he came close to the trophy on several occasions, but luck did not support. But, this time, the team, led by captain Temba Bavuma, has a golden opportunity to register themselves in the pages of history.

Bangar said, “If the South African team wins this match, it would be a ‘Eureka Moment’ for their cricket, just as India got a good victory in 1983, which changed the entire cricket structure, this victory will inspire the next generation of South Africa.”

It is not easy to defeat Australia, but the name is not decided

However, Bangar also admitted that South Africa has to face a very strong Australian team in the final, which is balanced and full of experience in every department.

He said, “To be honest, there is no clear weak link in the Australian team. They have experienced batsmen, and there are also players contributing in the lower order. But, cricket is not just played on name and record, what will perform better in two innings on the field, the winner will be the winner.”

South Africa ready to create history

After a long wait of 27 years, now South Africa has a chance to win a big title again. If they defeat Australia in the final, then it will not be just a trophy, but a new beginning for South Africa cricket.
